WALK HERE

Turn to Walks 21 and 22 at the back of this magazine for two stellar walks on the Gower Peninsula: 7½ miles out to Worms Head and over Rhossili Down, and a 9¾-mile circuit from Oxwich Bay up to Cefn Bryn.

GETTING THERE

Both walks are a 30-45 minute drive from Swansea and the M4, via the A4118. Arriving by train at Swansea railway station, you’ll need to walk or catch a bus to the bus station, then catch the number 118 or 119 for Rhossili (Monday to Saturday). For Oxwich Bay, you’ll need to change at Upper Killay for the 117 (www.natgroup.co.uk)

WHERE TO STAY

Country Walking enjoyed a warm welcome at the King Arthur Hotel, which overlooks the village green in Reynoldston at the heart of the peninsula. A traditional country inn with 18 handsomely furnished en suite rooms, it also boasts a one-bedroom cottage and self-catering apartments. B&B for two people in a small double room is £90pn. For a budget-friendly hostel break, book into YHA Port Eynon. Private rooms (sleeping between 2 and 6 people) in this former lifeboat station cost from £39pn (0345 371 9135; yha.org.uk)

WHERE TO EAT

We tucked into a delicious evening meal at Llangennith’s King’s Head in a beautiful setting facing Rhossili Down. Fish and chips (£11.75) always tastes better by the sea, but if that doesn’t tickle your taste buds, there’s ample choice of pub classics, salads and dishes from the grill you can wash down with a refreshing pint of locally-brewed Gower Gold (01792 386212; kingsheadgower.co.uk).

There are a few cafés in Rhossili, plus the restaurant and bar at the Worm’s Head Hotel. We enjoyed a warming hot chocolate and a scrumptious brownie at The Lookout (tasteofgower.com).

You’ll find a beach café and restaurant at Oxwich Bay.
