Stone 20
RRP £15 Target price: £10
The Stone 20 is about as simple as backpacks come, and that is no bad thing. I found myself reaching for this backpack more than any other for quick wanders or trips to the shop. Why? It’s compact and super lightweight, making it ideal for a flask of coffee and a pair of binoculars for walks close to home. The mesh back is nothing special, but it’s comfy enough, and I didn’t miss any fancy features when I was just strolling. There’s no hip belt, which isn’t a problem for minimal loads, but I did find it a strain on my shoulders when I started trying to pack more in. It holds its shape well, but there’s no firm structure or frame to the pack, which means that things can dig into the back if they’re not arranged carefully. Needless to say there is little in the way of ventilation either, but given the walking you’re likely to be doing with it, that really poses no problem. For the money, the Stone 20 fulfils its purpose admirably: it won’t take you far or high, but it will let you roam freely and lightly in a refreshingly uncomplicated way. RB
