WALK HERE
We caught the X4 Sapphire bus service from Whitby to Runswick Bay, and simply followed the Cleveland Way/England Coast Path south-west for eight miles back to Whitby. Navigation is a doddle – keep sea on left, and watch for the abbey on the horizon.
WHERE TO STAY
We had a fantastic night at Grosmont House (below), a few miles south-west at Grosmont in the beautiful North York Moors National Park. This beautifully presented B&B offers spacious rooms, a warm welcome and full Covid precautions, with one of the best breakfasts we’ve had in the Yorkshire area (which is saying a lot). Provisional reopening in July; rates vary and there are plenty of special offers. Visit grosmonthouse. co.uk or call 01947 895699. And for an evening meal, pop down to the Geall Art Gallery, opposite Grosmont Station on the North Yorkshire Moors Railway, whose adjoining Steam Café serves possibly the best homemade pizza west of the Carpathian Mountains. 01947 895007.
WHERE TO EAT & DRINK
There are loads of options, but you don’t have to search the web for long before people mention the Magpie Café (01947 602058, magpiecafe. co.uk), which is a Whitby institution. Cod and chips £8, or £5 takeaway. Or try The Walrus and the Carpenter on Church Street (01947 605963, no website).
