WALK HERE

Turn to Walk 23 in this issue for a full route guide and map.

GETTING HERE

The walk starts from the west end of Llyn Ogwen, on the A5 between Capel Curig and Bethesda. Snowdon Sherpa S6 bus between Pen-y-Pass and Bangor train station stops here, but service is limited to Sat, Sun and Bank Hols, with an hourly service on school holiday weekends, twice a day on term-time weekends.

WHERE TO STAY

YHA Idwal Cottage (yha.org.

uk, 0345 371 9744) is in a perfect location at the start of the walk with private rooms, camping and cabins, or you could stay at the legendary Pen y Gwryd Hotel (pyg.

co.uk, 01286 870211) on the other side of the Glyders. We stayed at the Bangor Travelodge, just 15 minutes up the A5 with rooms from £37.99 (travelodge.co.uk) or you could book onto a course at Plas y Brenin National Outdoor Centre (pyb.co.uk, 01690 720214) in Capel Curig; a 2-day intro to scrambling or rock-climbing costs from £299.

WHERE TO EAT

Pick up a hot drink and fuel for the hill at the Ogwen Snack Bar (ogwen.co.uk), while for post-walk dinners there are two good inns in Capel Curig: the Bryn Tyrch (bryn tyrchinn.co.uk, 01690 720338) and the Tyn-y-Coed (tyn-y-coed.co.uk, 01690 720331), both of which also have rooms, while the Moel Siabod Café (moelsiabodcafe.co.uk, 01690 720429) is renowned for its big breakfasts and huge scones.
