THE NORTH FACE
VECTIV Taraval
RRP £110 Target price £100
There are two reasons to feel suspicious of this shoe. First, it’s not waterproof, which means you can really only use it in the warmest, driest conditions. Second, it feels like a bit of an afterthought: VECTIV is a new range of ultra-technical running shoes; the Taraval is one of only two variants designed for walking. So it looks a bit like a token a chunky walking version in amongst all the speedy sneakers the makers were really excited about. But whether that’s the case or not, the vital thing is: the Taraval is lovely
to wear. The superthick outsole forms part of a curving ‘rocker’ unit which absorbs impacts and propels you forward. While a lot of highly cushioned shoes can deaden the energy of your stride, these don’t. They’re especially good on descents: TNF claim they reduce downhill tibial impact by 10%, and my knees really have felt far less aggrieved coming down in these than they do in most footwear. And the lack of waterproofing means they are beautifully breathable. So I’m going to ignore my misgivings and admit that for warm, dry days, I’m not sure there’s many better walking shoes than this.
