SCARPA Mojito Trail GTX
RRP £160 Target price £144
If the Mojitos were a car they would be a classic Ferrari: luxuriously upholstered, Italian designed and a delight to sashay up high mountain passes in. They’re also rather expensive, to put it mildly. So what do you get for 160 quid? They’re snug, low cut and light up top (sporting supple suede uppers), but with a tanklike undercarriage more akin to a boot – by which I mean the stout Vibram outsoles with chunky lugs and a bashdefying rubber rand around the toes. Admittedly, they felt like overkill for the easy gradients of the Chilterns, but flinty, chalky paths are as good as anywhere to appreciate their supreme grip and sturdiness. And with Gore-Tex waterproofing, they had no trouble shedding a sudden squally downpour. Straight from the box, I found them to be very comfy as well: supportive around my heels and arches, and cushioned in the insole and around the collars too. Also note the lacing that extends down to the toe, which Scarpa say helps fine tune a precise fit. If it’s quality all-rounders you’re after, these are just the ticket (the women’s version is out this autumn). PT
