Muddy boots welcome
The Bell, Monmouthshire
The first thing you’ll notice is the dog wearing wellies. The second, that it’s painted on a sign above The Dog and Boot Bar, where both hounds and muddy footwear are welcome.
The Bell sits on the bank of the River Monnow at Skenfrith, a few miles east of the Brecon Beacons National Park boundary and happily a bit off the beaten track. The surrounding Monmouthshire countryside is glorious: impossibly green fields wrap over contours just steep enough to work up a thirst, while a walk around the ruins of Skenfrith Castle will whisk you back 900 years.
For dogs, The Bell offers complimentary biscuits, while hungry walkers can tuck into awardwinning, local food – from burgers to truffled mushroom risotto – out on the pretty garden terrace or in the restaurant, with Butty Bach from the Wye Valley brewery to drink.
