The Hunter’s Inn, Exmoor

-

It’s hard to think of a place where the pub and the landscape are so perfectly interlocked as here at Heddon’s Mouth Cleave, where Exmoor meets the South West Coast Path. The Hunter’s Inn is the only building in this treefringed, steep-sided valley, and what a building it is: a splendid confection of cream-coloured walls and forest-green timbers. Great walks radiate in all directions: down the valley to Heddon’s Mouth Beach; up through the trees to the clifftops of Peter Rock or Highveer Point, or inland to Trentishoe Cleave. Slightly further away, but still within a great day’s walk, are the Valley of Rocks, Lynmouth or the immense cliffs of Great and Little Hangman. Pub and valley are all now in the care of the National Trust, so you know what to expect: elegant, classy vibes in a beautifully managed landscape.
