An intricate portait of Offa decorates an 8th-century coin. His kingdom of Mercia lay east of the dyke, spanning much of England’s midlands, and at times into Kent, Sussex and East Anglia too, making him one of the most powerful Anglo-Saxon rulers, second only to Alfred the Great.
