A MUCH-LOVED LANDSCAPE

Leading the way on CW’s walk up to the gate was Woodland Trust volunteer Tony Grenwood (right). The Trust now manages most of the Smithills Estate; at 1700 acres it’s the largest site ever acquired by the trust in England. As part of the Winter Hill 125 celebrations, Tony has written a downloadable audio walk (to be released this month) which tells the whole story as you walk the exact locations where it happened.

“It’s a story Bolton should be very proud of,” he says. “There is a strong link between the town and Winter Hill. Today we have better access than we’ve ever had, and it’s managed by people who care about it. So this is a great chance for people to connect with this story, come for a walk up here, and appreciate what we’ve got.”
