The Middle Muddle
The exact middle or ‘centroid’ of Britain is either located in a field near Whalley (grid reference SD723367) or just west of Whitendale Hanging Stones in the Forest of Bowland (SD642565). It depends how you calculate it. Either way, the honour goes to Lancashire, though Haltwhistlians in Northumberland would strongly disagree. The point furthest from the sea is harder to dispute. In 2003, the Ordnance Survey declared it to be Church Flatts Farm near Coton in the Elms in Derbyshire (SK253145).
