WALK HERE
Turn to Walk 11 at the back of this issue for our 7½-mile adventure in Thetford Forest. (Swimming is optional.)
GETTING THERE
Our route starts in Santon Downham, a small hamlet in the Little Ouse Valley between Brandon and Thetford, reachable via the B1107.
WHERE TO EAT
Grab a tea, coffee and/or ice cream at Forestry England’s High Lodge visitor centre (0300 067 4401, forestryengland.uk/high-lodge). In Brandon, try The Ram Inn (01842 810275, ramhotel.co.uk), where our route meets the Little Ouse. Dating back to 1349, The Ram is the oldest building in Brandon and is good for pub grub and Sunday roasts. You can also stay there (see below). Or try Tilly’s Tearoom on the High Street (01842 339163 or via Facebook): sandwiches for £3.50 and afternoon tea for £10.95.
WHERE TO STAY
The Ram (see above) has doubles with breakfast for £45. Alternatively, the luxurious Thomas Paine Hotel in Thetford (01842 750372, thethomaspainehotel.co.uk) has elegant double rooms with breakfast for £120.
