Meet The Fans

-

You’ve probably heard of Arthur’s Seat, the hilltop in Edinburgh. But the twin peaks of Pen y Fan and Corn Du were also once known as Cadair Arthur – or Arthur’s Chair. In 1899, a mountaineer called Caleb George Cash printed a table in the Cairngorm Club Journal of the all the peaks he could see from Scotland’s Arthur’s Seat, creating a ticklist known as the Arthurs. Inspired by that, I’m at work on a list of all the peaks I can see from this Arthur’s Chair, which I think should be called the Fans. After all, getting to know your favourite mountain isn’t just about climbing it, but admiring it from different angles. Studying the peaks marked on Pen y Fan’s viewfinder panorama it looks like there are 27 mountains over the 600m mark visible from up here, from

Fan Frynych across the A470 to Arenig Fawr 63 miles away in Snowdonia. I’ve walked 17; 10 to go.

See viewfinder panoramas.org/ panoramas – the site has panos for lots of mountains so you can choose your favourite.
