GETTING HERE

The walk begins from a minor road across Birker Fell, five miles east of Ravenglass. Nearest public transport is The Green train station on the

‘La’al Ratty’ heritage line (ravenglass-railway.co.uk), three miles down the lane from the start.

WHERE TO STAY & EAT

The King George IV Inn down in Eskdale (kinggeorge-eskdale.com, 01946 723407) has four self-catering apartments sleeping two to four people (three night minimum, from £68pn). They also serve food Wed-Sun including regional specialiti­es like Cumbrian Tatie Pot (£11) and Cumberland ham with egg and chips (£14).
