WALK HERE

Turn to Walk 23 in this issue. The causeway is only passable three hours either side of low tide – check times at bbc.co.uk/weather/coast-andsea/tide-tables/7/393

GETTING HERE

The walk starts a couple of miles south of Campbeltown on the Kintyre peninsula. No public transport to start but buses to Campbeltown, plus ferry from Ardrossan.

WHERE TO STAY

There are four holiday cottages on the island itself – the Lighthouse Keeper’s Cottage, the Lookout and two luxury wood cabins, all with gorgeous sea views out to the Isle of Arran. Crossing is by 4x4 and essentials like eggs – and local whisky – are included. From £135pn for two, minimum 2 nights in cabins, 3 nights in cottages (07901 846744, davaarisland.co.uk).

WHERE TO EAT

You’ll need to bring a picnic to eat on the island, but plenty of choice in Campbeltown including great pub food at Ardshiel Hotel (ardshiel.co.uk), delicious breakfasts and scones at Cafe Bluebell, and wraps, noodles and burgers at Olly’s Street Food – find more about them both on Facebook.
