IN LOVE WITH THE BLACK MOUNTAINS

Bryony Carter on the Brecon Beacons

Having completed all 23 ‘Beacon’ summits in the Brecon Beacons National Park, it was time to turn my attention east to the Black Mountains. A free bank holiday weekend was the perfect opportunity to explore this quieter corner of the park, so off I went with my friend Adrian, and dogs Dave and Eddie in tow. The paths were well-maintained, making this area really accessible. The incredibly green, punchy landscape and rolling hills make it feel like you’re viewing the world in HD, and if you’re lucky you’ll see the Welsh Mountain ponies that roam around the mountaintops. My favourite summit of the day was Chwarel y Fan – grand views and the perfect lunch stop. This was a great mid-length hike: not too technical but rewarding as anything.
