I DO love this mountain
The article on Pen y Fan struck a chord. I can’t remember when we first climbed to the top, but it was when the path up from Storey Arms was a single sheep track. My husband and I have climbed it many times, for pleasure and as a training exercise for various expeditions, with our three children and later our grandchildren.
One Easter, having set off in good weather, we reached Corn Du when the snow started to fall. After thinking we would retrace our steps King-Wenceslasstyle, it was only our knowledge of the mountain that got us safely back to a cairn on the lower path in a complete whiteout with a flask of coffee. The weather changed as suddenly as earlier, and we ended up walking the complete horseshoe in sunshine.
My mountain walking days are over now, but on a day with good weather we can still see Pen y Fan from our home in Swansea, and wish we were there! Thank you for an enjoyable article.
