COLD CALLING

-

The Lake District map is sprinkled with seasonal names. Turn to Walk 17 in this issue and you’ll find a route in nearby Martindale that passes two Winter

Crags. There’s also a Frost Hole east of Staveley, and a Cold Fell north of Calder Bridge, ‘where generations of west Cumbrians have been sledging’ according to a reader recommendation in The Guardian. The icilynamed hill is prized for its long slope at the Goldilocks angle: steep enough to be fun, but not too steep for the puff back up with a toboggan. Or head to Wrynose Bottom for a double-hit of wintry toponymy with Cold Pike rising to to the north and Wet Side Edge to the south. The two can be linked in a seven-mile walk, although driving to it can get dicey as it’s bookended by the single-lane, 25-30% gradients of the Wrynose and Hardknott Passes.
