MONTANE Janhukot Jacket
RRP £220 Target price £198
A jacket with Michelin Man levels of puffiness, the Janhukot is easily the warmest here. One for sub-zero hill conditions, it will suit anyone whose winter walks involve periods of standing still – be it taking photographs or observing wildlife. Its cocooning warmth comes from 260g of hydrophobic 650+ fill power down arrayed in plump baffles made from a DWR-treated 40 denier Pertex shell fabric. In other words, it’s extremely toasty, reasonably tough and can withstand light rain. Unsurprisingly, all that insulation paired with robust fabrics and fastenings makes the Janhukot comparatively hefty. Helpfully it comes with a roll-top dry bag, into which it crushes down to rugby ball proportions. And despite its bulky looks, I found the cut wonderfully unrestrictive. I could seal in warmth with the Velcro cuffs and cinch cord adjustable hem, and tighten the wire-peaked hood into a snug balaclava. Besides two roomy, fleece-lined waist pockets there’s a pouch and a zipped chest pocket inside. Most walkers don’t need anything quite so toasty as the Janhukot, but it’s ideal for boreal-loving loiterers like me. PT
