Birds have a fear of feathers.

Recent research shows birds are hesitant to enter a nest if they can see loose feathers inside, presumably because it looks like an avian murder scene. Some species like blue tits play on this and deliberately place bright white plumage on their nests to deter other birds from moving in while they’re away.
