Walking gave us wings

-

When the first lockdown began we decided to walk from the house for exercise. To add some interest, as part-time bird watchers, we came up with the idea of recording as many bird species as possible too. During the second less-strict lockdown I came across a large pile of Country Walking magazines in a friend’s house and noticed the 1000-mile challenge and it became our new target. We achieved it on a cold, sunny, very frosty morning, a day when we found we couldn’t stop walking as we were feeling so much fitter than we started. 2000 was the new target. The picture shows us just outside Lyndhurst on a windswept September 2021 day completing the 2000 miles – completed in 330 days at an average of 6.02 miles and with a total of 127 bird species spotted along the way. A year of new walking routes and new birds found! Wonderful.
