5 GREAT SCRAMBLES
Y GRIBIN, Snowdonia
Put this into OS Maps: SH 651 591
This ridge up Glyder Fawr follows a really elegant line, and is a perfect starter grade 1 scramble: you’ll feel like you’ve done something, but it won’t scare the pants off you.
JACK’S RAKE, Pavey Ark, Lake District
Put this into OS Maps: NY 2856 0792
A clear, crotchety path up a cliff face, Jack’s Rake has several quite steep bits but it’s a great place to practise in relatively unexposed surroundings.
STRIDING EDGE, Helvellyn, Lake District
Put this into OS Maps: NY 349 149
A rocky tightrope that makes for the most memorable ascent of Helvellyn possible – perfectly complemented with a descent via Swirral Edge.
KILMAR TOR, Bodmin Moor
Put this into OS Maps: SX 253 749
The finest ridge walk/scramble in the south west, says local Mark Camp: ‘You can make it as easy or as difficult as you like; the views are stunning, and not a tourist in sight!’
CRIB GOCH, Snowdonia
Put this into OS Maps: SH 624 552
The ultimate grade 1 scramble in terms of exposure and a spectacular location, yet technically not the most difficult. Just watch those drops! Demands dry weather, a head for heights and mountain experience.
