This ridge up Glyder Fawr follows a really elegant line, and is a perfect starter grade 1 scramble: you’ll feel like you’ve done something, but it won’t scare the pants off you.

JACK’S RAKE, Pavey Ark, Lake District

A clear, crotchety path up a cliff face, Jack’s Rake has several quite steep bits but it’s a great place to practise in relatively unexposed surroundings.

STRIDING EDGE, Helvellyn, Lake District
