Mid-layer or base? This could be both and, testing it during winter, I have certainly used it as such, pulling it on over the top of closer-fitting baselayers and layering it under thicker or more windproof tops. It’s made from 95% merino wool and 5% polyamide, the latter giving extra stretch and durability, and it feels incredibly comfortable; more like a sweatshirt than a piece of outdoor gear. Being mostly made of merino wool – which is naturally breathable, temperature-regulating and antimicrobial (therefore anti-stink) – it’s well suited for days out in the hills. I particularly like the cut: long in the body to keep the belly and kidneys comfortably covered and long enough in the arms to keep the wrists snug. The crossover detail at the collar of the hood is nice too, wrapping softly around the throat to give warmth and coverage up to the chin but without a zip. No pockets exactly but a couple of zips hidden in the seams give access to a discreet kangaroo pouch. Personally, I like these for keeping hands warm but not so much for storing items. Fantastic for adding a layer of warmth but in poor weather you’ll need more.
