Messy can be good
Being messy gets a bad rap but the Cairngorms Connect project is proving the upsides of being untidy by deliberately scruffing up Scots pine plantations in Abernethy Forest. They’re pulling down trees and stripping patches of bark to provide a more varied habitat for wildlife like the rare capercaillie, and to let more sunlight hit the forest floor. Walk there and you’ll discover dull rows of rodstraight trunks turning to a tangled, twisted, interesting woodland.
