Our maiden mountain

- Nandini Chakraborty, Leicester

This month two friends and I climbed Snowdon via the Llanberis path on a particularly blustery day. I’ve done many mountains, but for my friends it was their first – and now we have a solidly committed ‘trekking club’.

We managed to get some lovely views from the top just before the clouds came down, but heard people saying they’d climbed Snowdon many times in the past and had never had a view from the summit! We felt very lucky.

Climbing a mountain is always a super feeling. Snowdon isn’t Everest (though the internet says that Sir Hilary did practise climbs here!) and beginners can do the Llanberis path with no problems, as my friends did. But it is still challenging enough to feel a sense of satisfaction at the end of the day. Mountains bring a sense of freedom, openness and connection with nature. There is no feeling quite like the crunch of the trail under your feet, the uphill trudge taking away all other thoughts, other than the focus of summit.

Here’s hoping to do more mountains in the coming months. And thanks to Country Walking for all the stories, the enthusiasm and encouragement.
