Wherry Line for Berney Arms

-

Rail stations in spine-tinglingly remote locations aren’t only found in Scotland: this tiny halt lies far from road or village in Norfolk’s Broads, and you have to ask the driver to stop and let you off. As the train chugs off towards Norwich or Great Yarmouth, you’re left among the reeds and waterways, the huge skies reflected in long liquid lines. Head east and you’ll soon reach the River Yare (although the Berney Arms pub on its banks has sadly closed) to pick up the Wherryman’s Way which is named, as is the railway line, for the sail and oar craft that once plied the rivers. Turn south to meander by the Yare to another station at Reedham; turn north to chart a loop across the marshes and back to Berney Arms* to flag down a train home (check times; they’re not exactly frequent). And binoculars are a must; the Broads teem with birds.
