FIX A (SMALL) HOLE IN A SOCK

-

As with chafing heels, which become painful blisters if left unremedied, holey socks are best dealt with sooner than later. Gaping holes require darning – using a darning needle, egg and wool to weave over the gap. But for a tiny hole (like this one, about 1cm across) oversewing or blanket stitching will suffice.

TIME: 10 mins

YOU WILL NEED:

• Needle, scissors and thread (cotton will do).

1 Turn the sock inside out and fold it along the hole, so that the two sides of the hole are aligned. Next, trim away any frayed or loose fibres. Double thread your needle (about 40cm is enough), tying a stopper knot in the trailing ends.

2 Starting at one end of hole, pass the needle and thread gently through both sides. Do this again in the same spot, but leave a loop. Pass the needle and thread back through the loop and gently pull it closed.

3 Repeat step 3, working your way along the hole to the end. On reaching the end, oversew the final stitch a few times, then snip off the loose thread.
