DID YOU KNOW?
Viscount Cecil of Chelwood co-founded the League of Nations (precursor to the United Nations) and the Pedestrians’ Association. Concerned about walker casualties on roads – around 7000 a year – he and journalist Tom Foley created the group in 1929 and campaigned for safety measures including speed limits and zebra crossings. Now known as Living Streets, the charity continues to work for a better walking environment to encourage us to make everyday journeys on foot. See livingstreets.org.uk
