ALPKIT Definition Waterproof Jacket

-

RRP £250 Target price £250

There are three parts to considering the impact an item of gear has on the environment. The start of its life: how it’s made and the materials and chemicals used. The middle of its life: how well it performs and lasts. And the end: how recyclable, reusable or biodegradable it is. This jacket focuses on the first and middle parts. Alpkit say it’s one of the first ‘high-performance’ shell jackets to use PFC-free DWR treatment on its outer fabric. PFCs (perfluorinated compounds) were once used as standard in waterproofing. These compounds are extremely long-lived but, though their toxicity varies, are harmful to ecosystems in high quantities. One report by Greenpeace found them in the snowfall and high mountains lakes of eight remote locations across the world (bit.ly/ greenpeacepfcs). The Definition rejects the use of them altogether, which means it doesn’t repel oil or dirt as easily but still works well – it just might get a bit grubbier than your average jacket. It’s made with hardy nylon fabric, waterproof zips, adjustable cuffs and hem, and a fully adjustable hood. The fit is sleek but, with pre-shaped arms, it allows full freedom of movement. It feels similar to a much pricier Gore-Tex Pro jacket. It’ll earn its keep even on the toughest days in the Highlands. SR alpkit.com

WHAT COULD BE BETTER?

Not a lot. I’m hopeful that, in the not too distant future, this level of performance can be achieved with all recycled and recyclable fabrics.
