Miles walked this month: 96 Having the Yorkshire Three Peaks in this month got me thinking about other challenges, and one in particular I rarely read much about. You’ll know of the Munros – the 282 Scottish peaks over 3000ft high – but what about the Corbetts? They’re 222 Scottish mountains listed by Englishman John Rooke Corbett in the 1920s, each between 25003000ft high, but crucially (and different to the Munros) having at least 500ft drop between themselves and any neighbour. According to great guidebook writer Irvine Butterfield: ‘The Corbetts are more difficult than the Munros. There aren’t many occasions where you can knock off more than one in a walk. And they’ve also got a bigger spread: you’ll see more of Scotland doing the Corbetts.’ Tempted by this characterful lot? I am.

Note to self: Look at all these hills Munroists miss – The Cobbler (pictured), Cir Mhor, Quinag, Ben Loyal...
