In father’s footsteps
Dad was fitter and healthier than he had been in years when he died suddenly on 7 October last year. Having encouraged him repeatedly to be more active, even by just taking a short walk from his front door each day, our conversations progressed to daily, weekly and monthly step counts.
At the beginning of this year, I decided to walk 1000 boots-on miles in memory of Dad. My challenge: start at the beginning of my birthday month (January) and finish by the end of Dad’s birthday month (June). On 19 June, Father’s Day, I walked my 1000th boots-on mile. A daily walking routine – realistic distances during the working weeks and longer walks at the weekends – kept me focused. Not only did I achieve my goal, but I feel healthier physically, mentally and emotionally. Thanks for the challenge Dad! There’s no stopping me now! Maxine Gillett, by email
