No contours? No problem

-

Kim Johnston’s letter in June (‘Summit for everyone’) prompted me to write to encourage others to go for low-level walks. And what can be lower and more level than the Fens? My friend and I have walked from south Essex to mid-Lincolnshire over the course of three years and the fenland was probably the best bit. Vast skies, wide open spaces, the colour of the fields – oil seed rape, daffodils, purple sprouting broccoli, cereals and winter bleached grass, to say nothing of the amazing amount of blossom in the hedgerow trees this year and skylarks providing the music. Don’t be put off by no contours on the map! Take the Greenwich meridian trail for a spin from Cambridge, heading northwards.
