LOCH IN LOCH MAREE, Scottish Highlands
THIRTEEN-AND-A-HALF MILES LONG, 2½ wide , and peppered with freckles: Maree is the fourth largest freshwater loch in Britain. On closer inspection, those freckles are islands: five large ones wooded with pristine Caledonian forest, and over 60 islets. And its largest isle, Eilean Sùbhainn, has its own lochan, which itself has a couple of islands in it. It’s the only place in Britain where this occurs: a loch with an island, which has a loch, with an island, and let’s not forget Britain is also an island. The only way to reach the loch-in-a-loch is by canoe, but you can walk Maree’s shore beneath the looming hulk of Slioch and look out to the island and its secret nested pool.
