GETTING HERE

Edale is on the Hope Valley Line which connects with trains from Manchester, Leeds and Peterborou­gh. Numerous bus services to Hope from where Edale is a one-stop £2.30 train ride. Driving? Northbound on M1, exit 29 to A671; southbound on M1, exit 36 to A61 and then A57; northbound on M6 – exit 14 to A34 then A520; southbound on M6/M56/M60, exit 27 M60 then A6.

WHERE TO STAY

Edale Youth Hostel in nearby Nether Booth is a great choice from £18 a night (yha.org.uk/hostel/ yha-edale-activity-centre).

The tents-only Fieldhead campsite costs £10pppn and is highly rated (fieldheadc­ampsite.co.uk); numerous guest houses in Edale. See booking.com

WHERE TO EAT

A meal at the Old Nag’s Head is surely a rite-of-passage (and there are 10 free parking slots outside it if you get there very early) (01433 670291, the-old-nagshead.co.uk). If not try the Rambler Inn (01433 670268, dorbiere.co.uk/

the-rambler-inn). The Penny Pot café near Edale station is affordable and highly rated (01433 670688, pennypotca­fe. com).
