SUUNTO Suunto 9 Peak

-

THE SUUNTO 9 Peak is the lightest and arguably the prettiest of the lot. It looks like a classy lifestyle watch rather than an outdoor beast, the main reason being Suunto’s confidence in the sapphire glass face, which is not surrounded by an upraised bezel. Their faith seems justified; I’ve deliberately dropped it on a rocky path and it sustained not a scratch. But in other respects it struggles to compete with Garmin and Coros, which is worrying considering the price. The menu structure is confusing, it takes a little longer to locate me than the others do (sometimes up to three minutes if I haven’t used the GPS for a while) and the sync to the Suunto app takes longer too. Plus the plasticky strap allows a fair bit of sweat to build up. But the build quality of the watch itself is great, and once you know exactly what you like it to do, you can configure the interface to your liking. And I really like the Suunto app: it opens up on your activity archive and not a bunch of irrelevant stats, so you can instantly look at the walks you’ve done. Plus you can easily toggle between decent topo mapping and satellite imagery, and watch walkthroughs of your route to see your pace, altitude and heart rate as you walked. (I have lost hours doing this.) Battery life is good; a claimed max of 170 hours or 24 hours of constant tracking with full GPS. A classy option, with some odd quirks.
