OUTDOORACTIVE PRICE:
Free (£27 annual Pro subscription; £54 Pro+)
The Viewranger app merged into Outdooractive in
2020, and most of VR’s muchloved functions have now been incorporated, although some
VR fans feel the new interface is less intuitive than the old one was.
But this is still the chief rival to OS
Maps: pay the Pro subscription and you’ll get 1:25K and 1:50K OS mapping in beautiful clarity, plus great planning, tracking and archiving features. It’s really easy to plot a route – the line will snap to usable paths anywhere, not just in national parks as OS Maps does. You can display multiple routes on the same screen, and the system works across phone, desktop and tablet too. There’s a super-premium version (Pro+) offering 3D visuals and more specialist mountain-area mapping, including Harvey Maps. A superb package.
