WALK HERE

Pillboxes can be found in lots of locations: for Lavenham, download a walk at walk1000miles.co.uk/bonusroutes, which follows the stop-line to Lineage Woods before looping back. For more – a lot more! – on pillboxes around the country, see pillbox-study-group.org.uk

GETTING THERE

Lavenham is on the A1141, six miles NE of Sudbury. Bus 753 links to Sudbury and Bury St Edmunds (10+ per day, Mon-Sat), both of which have rail stations.

WHERE TO STAY

De Vere House (07771927946, deverehouse.co.uk) is a luxury B&B in one of Lavenham’s enchantingly wonky, timber-framed houses – which you might have spotted in a Harry Potter film (double room B&B £195pn). Wide choice in Sudbury and Bury St Edmunds.

WHERE TO EAT

Keep with the historic theme at Lavenham Blue Vintage Tearooms (lavenhambluetearooms.com), serving doorstep sandwiches with bread from the baker three doors down, cream teas (sweet and cheese-scone savoury options) and full afternoon teas too.
