Makes you think

Walking in Dorset recently I came across a sign on a gate post advising me: ‘If cattle or ponies approach, let your dog off the lead.’ Is this so the dog can chase away the livestock? Seems unlikely. Is it to enable the dog to scarper to safety? Is it so he can create a diversion while I make my getaway? Would I ever see him again?
