Turn to Walk 19 in this issue for a turn-byturn guide to a 10¼-mile Penhill circular. Download a leaflet for the easy four-mile Bartle Trail at walk1000miles.co.uk/bonusroutes
GETTING THERE
Our walk starts in West Burton, where there’s space for considerate parking around the village green. The village is a five-minute drive from the A684 through Wensleydale via the B6160. Or you could set off from West Witton, where there’s limited lay-by parking east of the village on the westbound side of the A684. The 156 ‘Wenlseydale Voyager’ bus between Hawes and Leyburn calls at both villages (Mon-Sat). On Sundays and bank holidays, the 856 ‘Wensleydale Flyer’ runs from Northallerton (via the railway station) to West Witton. See dalesbus.org
WHERE TO EAT
Our walk passes three pubs, including The Fox & Hounds at West Burton (01969 663111) and The Fox (formerly with hounds) at West Witton. Both offer classic pub fare; £13.50 gets you West Burton sausages with mustard mash and ale gravy at The Fox, where there’s always locally brewed beer on pump (01969 623650; foxwitton.
co.uk). For pre-walk coffee and cake, pop into the tea room adjoining West Burton’s village shop overlooking the green (01969 663857).
WHERE TO STAY
Country Walking stayed up dale at Church View (pictured) in Askrigg. A cosy two-bedroom cottage sleeping up to four guests, it’s equipped with a log-burning stove. The village itself, which doubled as Darrowby in the original BBC adaptation of All
Creatures Great and Small, boasts three pubs, a coffee shop cum deli and the Yorkshire Dales
Brewery. Three-night stays cost from £444 (01947 600700; yorkshireholiday cottages.co.uk).
We’ve previously enjoyed bed and breakfast at
Low Mill Guesthouse in nearby Bainbridge. Two nights in an en-suite double room cost from £230 (01969 650553; lowmillguesthouse.co.uk). For inexpensive accommodation, head further up dale to YHA Hawes (camping from £15pn, beds in shared rooms from £20.50pn; yha.org.uk).
