Winter waves crash over some of artist Anthony Gormley’s 100 life-sized, cast-iron figures at Crosby Beach in Merseyside. It’s been 13 years since the unveiling of this extraordinary installation – Another Place – and, despite some initial opposition, it has become a major regional tourist attraction. Each figure weighs 650kg and is attached to the beach by two-metre steel piles. Originally based on a cast of Gormley’s own body, the statues have been weathered by the waves and colonised by organisms such as barnacles.
