Two of the earliest heralds of spring combine in this photograph: a male great tit and hazel catkins. Great tits fill late winter woods with their strident two-note calls – “tee-cher, tee-cher, tee-chee” while hazels dangle golden catkins – their male flowers – in the hope that a breeze will distribute their pollen to female catkins on neighbouring trees. Great tits, like many small birds, still welcome full garden feeders at this time of year.
