This year’s Springwatch (see page 40) hopes to feature a very colourful addition to Britain’s fauna – the ring-necked parakeet. Hailing from tropical Asia and Africa, the species escaped from private aviaries and survives in the UK’s colder climate. It is now seen in every London park and its strident call is heard throughout the south-east, where its population numbers tens of thousands. It nests in tree-holes and some birders fear it may be displacing native tree-nesters such as starlings, nuthatches and jackdaws.
