When the position of warden of Skomer was advertised in 1976, Mike knew he was within touching distance of his childhood ambition. On the day of the interview, we were told the job was ours if we could be ready to leave the mainland in 10 days and if we could be married by then. For me, aged 20, it was a momentous decision, but I recognised it as an opportunity that would never come again. I left college the next day, and we set about amassing the supplies we’d need for our first three months on the island.
