Scandinavians are famous for their holiday huts in quiet countryside. But why has hutting never caught on here? Lesley Riddoch reports.

Insulating turf roofs still top traditional log cabins or holiday huts – ‘hytter’ – in mountain hideaways across Norway. The sods placed on layers of birch bark were an inexpensive way to waterproof hut roofs and also bear the weight of winter snow
