SELDOM SPOTTED

-

Britain has three woodpecker species and this, the lesser spotted, lives up to its name. The size of a sparrow, it is scarce, with just 2,000 pairs in the UK. February and March are the best times to find it. It loves old orchards and deciduous woodland and its drumming call is softer and longer than that of its great spotted cousin.
