FISHING
The UK has left the Common Fisheries Policy, which governed fisheries in UK waters since the early 1970s and allowed access to European waters for fishing vessels from all member states. The EU will lose 25% of its fish quota in UK waters over a 5½ year transition period. Andrew Locker, chairman of the National Federation of Fishermen’s Organisations (NFFO), said it represented a fraction of what was promised through Brexit. In January the NFFO said fish from Cornwall
“hit a brick wall of bureaucracy” at French ports. UK exporters have also been hit by rules that allow only ready-to-eat shellfish accompanied by an export health certificate to be exported to the EU.
