Clubs look at Haynes

Championship clubs for defender Ryan Haynes.

The 21-year-old defender found himself playing second fiddle to Lewis Page in the early stages of the season but has been a regular in the leftback position since Russell Slade’s arrival.

The game will take place next Tuesday (7.30pm) and is set to be broadcast live on Sky.

Tickets go on general sale on Thursday. FORGOTTEN man Kwame Thomas made his long-awaited comeback yesterday.

The 21-year-old summer signing from Derby County has played just over half an hour of first-team football since signing for the club in the summer, having been plagued by a groin problem he had when he joined the club.

But the lively forward made a return to competitive football as the Sky Blues’ development side who went down 3-0 to QPR Under-23s at the Higgs Centre yesterday afternoon – going on as a second half substitute and getting through 33 minutes.

Although still some way off full match fitness, Thomas will be a welcome addition to Russell Slade’s struggling squad which is in need of attacking options and goal threats.

Tony Mowbray signed the England Under-20 international and had high hopes for him but he made just two substitute appearances for the former City boss, in the opening day defeat at Swindon Town and the goalless Ricoh Arena draw with Shrewsbury Town.

Mowbray said at the time: “He has a lot of assets and it’s a question of moulding him in the right way because I think he’s got the potential to be a really good footballer.

“We have to work with the assets and put them into the framework of our team and see what comes out the other end.

“He’s big, strong, fast, can run all day so there are plenty of raw materials there to work with and hopefully we can mould him into a really good footballer.”

He added: “His versatility was one of the things we liked about him because he can play anywhere across that front three with great mobility and speed.”

City boss Russell Slade used yesterday’s match to run the rule over Alex Gogic after the versatile former Swansea City man joined the Sky Blues on trial.

Although a centre-half by trade, the 22-year-old was deployed as a holding midfielder at the Higgs Centre.

The former Cyprus Under-19 international – currently without a club after being released by the Swans last summer – showed up reasonably well in the middle of the park where he put himself about and looked pretty fit and mobile.

A good size, Gogic is muscular and strong on the ball and got up and down the pitch well, making one excellent last ditch tackle in the box. However, he was guilty of giving the ball away a little too often the longer the game went on with a few overhit passes.

Also on show were fellow triallist Navid Nasseri and Cardiff City midfielder Theo Wharton, playing their second game for the Sky Blues.

And 20-year-old winger Nasseri was the pick of the trio, looking lively down the left, orcing the Rangers’ goalkeeper into a couple of decent saves and going the closest to City getting a goal.

Wharton, a 22-year-old central midfielder who worked with Slade at Cardiff, was again neat and tidy but nothing exceptional in the game in which Cian Harries played.

Harries had a trial with Liverpool earlier this month and was hotly tipped to be sold in the transfer window which closes at 11.00pm tonight.
