Bad decisions for jobseekers
WE all understand the need for economy in public spending, as the Conservative government seeks to balance the public books long-term and fund so many other important causes, such as the NHS. However, Tile Hill is a large area and well away from other job centre provision.
The consultation papers state that three miles or 20 minutes travel by public transport is reasonable if travelling by public service. Tile Hill job centre is four miles and 35 minutes travel by public service. This goes against the consultation’s own recommendation of reasonable travel time and uses the numbers in their report.
If people are seeking work, they may not be able to afford regular travel outside Tile Hill. We hope the subject can be very carefully considered by people who have visited the sites concerned.
This, coupled with the ruling Labour group wanting to close the Job Shop to save small amounts of money, does not sit well for Coventry’s jobseekers.
The Conservative group in Coventry propose that the council opens discussions with the DWP to operate a joint Job Shop/Job Centre to share and thereby save costs on both sides. We hope the public will put their views through the consultation process that finishes Tuesday, February 28 at 5pm.
