Why is it wrong to hold gin festival at cathedral?

-

VAL Flynn (Letters, June 1) thinks that it is sacrilegious to hold a gin festival in the Cathedral and that this behaviour (‘to swig gin’) is ‘contrary to Christ’s teaching’.

Some churches that are part of the Christian tradition are Puritan in their attitudes, but Christ wasn’t.

In fact, the only accusation of personal depravity brought against him in his lifetime was that he was ‘a gluttonous man and a wine-bibber’, that is, that he liked his food and drink too much.

Val Flynn should remember that his first miracle at Canaan was to turn the water into wine when supplies were getting low at a wedding feast. I don’t know if gin had been invented in Biblical times, but if it had, I guess that Jesus would have enjoyed a gin festival, and been up there with the best, sipping appreciatively!

Scared of a debate

I AM convinced it is somewhat symbolic that right at the very end of May, our very own Mrs May, pictured, refused to take part in a sevenway debate with other party leaders. It is worth noting at this point that this is the very same Mrs May who thinks she is the only one who can deal successfully on Brexit negotiations. There are four times as many leaders in this European debate than in the debate she refused to take part in.

If she is frightened of a debate with six other contributors I venture to suggest that she will be proverbially petrified when facing 27 leaders all after her blood.

This is the simple allegory “The end of May”.

Interest will soon disappear

COVENTRY’S three Labour parliamentary candidates have been bombarding us with campaign literature and really trying to engage with the local residents they profess to serve ever since the General Election was called.

Coventry Labour councillors have also been working hard to promote their superiors, hitting the campaign trail with vigour in their efforts to spread the party message and prove to us all how much they really care about Coventry.

Well done folks! But what a pity this level of commitment and enthusiasm for listening to the concerns of local people soon disappears once any of you are elected, be it to parliament or the council chamber.

If any of you really did care, you would be genuinely working hard for us all of the time, not just promising to at election time.

Just give us what we have paid for

YET again passengers have had to get off the Willenhall bus at the Asda supermarket in Cheylesmore as it was not going to Willenhall.

With no indication or notice, mothers with prams and toddlers, pensioners and people who had boarded the bus and paid the fare were told that was as far as the bus was going, that there was another one behind.

Whether or not Asda pays for this service to their store (a larger Asda less than a mile away being the next stop but one) is a moot point.

It is doubtful if other Cheylesmore shops , already affected by the supermarket presence, benefit from this odd bus arrangement.

Willenhall shoppers coming from the few shops left in the city centre just want the ride home they have paid for, like in any other part of this city.
