EVERYBODY get excited. Very excited.

A new act has been announced for Coventry’s Biggest Weekend – and it’s a good one.

We’ll be getting to welcome hometown 2-Tone legends The Selecter on to the stage on Sunday May 27.

Lead singer Pauline Black said: “2-Tone music originated in Coventry almost 40 years ago, so it is a real honour for The Selecter to be representing this pioneering multicultural movement at BBC’s The Biggest Weekend in May in our hometown, particularly in the aftermath of Coventry’s successful City Of Culture 2021 bid last year.”

The four-day festival takes place in the city next month on the late May bank holiday weekend.

The huge musical extravaganza will be broadcast on TV, radio and online and will celebrate the extraordinary breadth and diversity of music across the BBC.

The Biggest Weekend will host concerts in Belfast, Coventry, Swansea and Perth with sets available on Radio 1, Radio 2, Radio 3 and 6 Music, BBC iPlayer, online, mobile and extensive TV coverage on BBC One, Two and Four.

A huge list of names have been announced for BBC’s Biggest Weekend in Coventry on Sunday May 27 and Monday May 28.

On the Sunday, Stereophonics and Liam Gallagher join the likes of Snow Patrol, Billy Ocean, Paloma Faith and Jamie Cullum in taking to the stage at the War Memorial Park.

Tickets for that day have proven popular and have already sold out.

Acts playing on Monday include The BBC Concert Orchestra, Eliza Carthy and the Wayward Band, GoGo Penguin and Nigel Kennedy.

You can still grab tickets for their performances.

Tickets cost £22.50 for the Monday festival.

There is no age restriction to be able to attend, but those aged 16 and under must be accompanied by an adult.

Coventry City Council will have to fork out £300,000 to deliver the “biggest single music event ever planned by the BBC”.

But the authority has pointed out this is a oneoff payment – and the economic boost to the

city could run into the millions.

A council spokesperson said: “As part of the council’s annual budget setting process, a one-off amount of £300,000 has been set aside to enable delivery of the BBC’s Biggest Weekend event in Coventry – the biggest single music event ever planned by the BBC.

“There’ll be big economic benefits in terms of additional footfall and spend in the city over the weekend, which are likely to far outweigh the £300,000 outlay, plus the profile from hosting an event that enjoys national coverage on TV and radio platforms.

“Research in other cities that have hosted BBC weekend events shows we could expect an estimated benefit to the local economy of more than £3million, which is an incredible boost to the area.

“Being UK City of Culture 2021 means the city’s profile has never been higher. By hosting such events we are already developing strong relationships with BBC nationally which will help us deliver events in the future.”
